History and Jurisdiction
The Customs (Prev.) Zone, Patna was created vide Notification No. 14/2002 C.E.(N.T) dated- 08.03.2002 (w.e.f. 01.11.2002) consequent upon cadre restructuring by bifurcating erstwhile Customs & Central Excise Zone, Lucknow with headquarters at Central Revenue Building, Ranchi. The office of the Chief Commissioner was thereafter shifted from Ranchi to Patna w.e.f. from 09.02.2007 vide Notification No. 35/2002-CE (NT) dated 24.10.2002 read with Notification no. 14/2002-CE (NT)
There are 2 Customs Preventive Commissionerates (Patna and Lucknow). The Commissionerate of Customs, Patna was created in March 1972 vide Govt. of India’s Notification No. 95 dated 04.03.1972. The Customs (Prev.) Commissionerate, Lucknow, came into existence with effect from 20.06.1994, following bifurcation of the erstwhile Customs (Prev.) Commissionerate, Indo Nepal Border, with HQ at Patna.
The jurisdiction of Patna Customs (Preventive) Zone, Patna is spread over the entire stretch of Indo-Nepal border and some part of Indo-China border spread over the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, U.P. and Uttarakhand.
There are 9 Divisions, 3 ICPs, 27 LCSs, and 5 International Airports [Patna (Non functional), Gaya, Lucknow, Varanasi & Kushinagar] and 8 ICD’s (Bihta, Jamshedpur, Panki, Juhi Railway Yard, Chakeri, Agra, Madhosingh and Bhadohi.
